The Red Planet

Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun, has captivated human imagination more than any other world in the Solar System. Named after the Roman god of war for its blood-red appearance in the night sky, Mars has a distinctive rusty color that results from iron oxide, essentially rust, covering much of its surface. With a diameter of 6,779 kilometers, roughly half that of Earth, and a mass approximately one-tenth of Earth's, Mars is a smaller and colder world than our own, with a thin atmosphere composed of 95 percent carbon dioxide that provides virtually no insulation against the frigid temperatures that average around minus 60 degrees Celsius. Despite these harsh conditions, Mars is considered the most Earth-like planet in the Solar System and the most promising candidate for finding evidence of past or present extraterrestrial life.

The Martian surface features some of the most dramatic topography in the Solar System. Olympus Mons, a shield volcano approximately 21.9 kilometers high and 600 kilometers in diameter, is the tallest known mountain and largest known volcano on any planet. The Valles Marineris canyon system stretches approximately 4,000 kilometers across the Martian equator, reaching depths of up to 7 kilometers, dwarfing Earth's Grand Canyon in every dimension. The northern hemisphere is dominated by smooth, low-lying plains that may represent ancient ocean floors, while the southern hemisphere is heavily cratered and significantly higher in elevation, creating a global dichotomy in surface character that remains one of the major unsolved puzzles of Martian geology.

Mars has been more extensively explored by robotic spacecraft than any planet other than Earth. Since the first successful flyby by Mariner 4 in 1965, dozens of orbiters, landers, and rovers have studied Mars from orbit and on the surface. NASA's Curiosity rover, operating in Gale Crater since 2012, has discovered organic molecules and seasonal methane fluctuations that could potentially be linked to biological or geological processes. The Perseverance rover, which landed in Jezero Crater in 2021, is collecting rock samples for eventual return to Earth by a future sample return mission and carries the Ingenuity helicopter, which demonstrated powered flight in the thin Martian atmosphere for the first time. Multiple space agencies and private companies, most notably SpaceX, are actively developing plans for human missions to Mars, with the goal of establishing a permanent human presence on the Red Planet within the coming decades, an endeavor that would represent the most ambitious exploration project in human history.
